about

"The Article" explores a different angle in the story of a seventeen year old girl who opens up about her pornography addiction. While the article it's based off talks mostly about the issue of pornography, it fails to mention the devastating effects the trauma her mother inflicted on her set her up to become an addict. While there are missing gaps in the story such as the whereabouts of the girl's father, the one thing that is clear to me is her addiction was caused by her mother. Not only did her mother show and encourage her daughter to look at porn, she was a mentally abusive alcoholic. Being very general, childhood trauma disrupts brain development in a negative way causing deficiencies in brain chemicals such as dopamine, a reward seeking chemical that is essential for motivation and physical energy. Having this deficiency will cause a person to crave dopamine and behaviors such as viewing pornography artificially floods the brain with this chemical causing the viewer to become addicted. I wrote this song to highlight how trauma and bad parenting can damage an innocent human being, causing them to look for false solace that leads them to find comfort in destructive addictions. I also wanted to give a message of hope. It may be more uncommon for women to view pornography but she is far from alone. Although this young women feels she will struggle with this addiction for the rest of her life, I truly believe over time with the right resources and support she will beat her addiction and live in freedom.

lyrics

Verse 1
I know you're dying deep down inside
Unrighteous actions tangled in madness
Shame guilt fill you up inside
The course of you life prescribed you this fiction
A simple deny won't shake off the ties
Will I be free can I get free
Or will I stay tied

Chorus
Memories and burned in pictures
Trap your mind and warp your vision
When tears fall down from self-hatred
Close your eyes tonight your not alone

Verse 2
Unconscious coping self-medicating
It's not your own fault it's all mother's fault
You're broken inside attempting to repair
Shudder and shaking recalling your fall
This struggle will die I promise no lie
Time will pass by you'll be alright
And Liberated

Chorus
Memories and burned in pictures
Trap your mind and warp your vision
When tears fall down from self-hatred
Close your eyes tonight your not alone
